China: Through the Looking Glass

הרצאה בעברית

Beyond 'Made in China': A Silk Road of Style from Marco Polo to Yves Saint Laurent. Explore how the mystique of the East sparked Western imagination, revolutionized fashion, and raised questions about cultural dialogue

About:

"Made in China"? Not what you thought. Following the exhibition "China Through the Looking Glass" presented at the Metropolitan Museum in 2015, we will take a journey between East and West. We will examine the influence of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion, the representation of China and the Far East that ignited the Western imagination from the 16th century to Yves Saint Laurent, and the ethical questions that arise from the representation of "ethnicity" in a Western museum. Additionally, we will delve into relevant questions like what does opium have to do with the story of China and the West? What does the color red mean in Chinese culture? And how do dresses reflect the mood in the iconic film "In the Mood for Love"?
